Topamax is the trade name for the prescription medication Topiramate. It is an anticonvulsant medication that was originally created by the Ortho-McNeil Neurologics. It was first discovered for its potential uses in 1979 by researchers at McNeil Pharmaceuticals. Generic versions of the medication have been available since late 2006.
Topamax is prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy in both adults and children. It is also prescribed for the treatment of Lennox Gastaut syndrome which is a disorder in children that causes developmental delays. The FDA has also approved its use for the prevention of migraines and many psychiatrists prescribe Topamax for the treatment of bipolar disorder. In many situations this medication is prescribed along with others to offset the weight gain that is caused by some of the medications used to treat bipolar disorder as well as some antiseizure medications. While many psychiatrists use Topamax to treat psychiatric issues, the FDA actually fined Orotho-McNeil $6.14 million by promoting it as a medication that could do so. Despite this, many doctors continue to prescribe it because they really do feel that it helps their patients.
Like most medications on the market today, Topamax may cause some unintended side effects. These side effects are not experienced by all patients and those who do experience them often find that they subside on their own within a few days. Some of these side effects may include but are not limited to numbness and tingling, upper respiratory infections, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, memory recall problems, fatigue, confusion, and somnolence. Patients should discuss these side effects with their doctors to determine if the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks and the associated side effects.
